“Look around this room,” Sarah Freddie directed the crowd. “Do you know how much power is in this room right now?” Powerful words spoken by panelist Sarah Freddie to the eager audience gathered at the Cox School of Business to participate in SUCCESS FACTOR: A Panel Discussion, hosted by the DFW Chapter of the National Black MBA Association on October 28, 2010. The event is the third installment of the Wealth Creation Series sponsored by the Economic Development Committee of NBMBAA. Wil Murphy, executive producer of the 7-Figure Mindset series, served as moderator for the night’s panel.
Panelists included:
Panelists gave several characteristics of a good business leader – integrity, self-determination, and passion. Cliff Johnson chose a basketball analogy to convey his sentiments, “In a couple of words, check grammar and punctuation here, Be Lebron.” Johnson spoke in reference to the basketball icon, Lebron James' passion for the game and his decision to determine his future by moving to Miami and not remaining in the comfort of his home team , the Cleveland Cavaliers. Johnson compared James' decision to those individuals who stay in comfortable corporate jobs instead of taking a risk to tap into their full potential as entrepreneurs.
The panelists discussed effective networking. Networking as a useful tool involves building a community of diverse individuals that are useful toward a business goal. As a tool to effective networking, Onay Payne, instructed the audience to develop their own board of directors to accomplish that goal. Payne expounded on the virtues of having the right people around you to achieve success. James Prewitt, stated that most people errantly surround themselves with their peer group to create their network. “Most people in my network have really nothing in common.” Houston native, Sarah Freddie, the selfdescribed “networking queen”, has another royal distinction to her credit – Miss USA Pageant winner. According to Freddie, networking is important because of the interdependency of everyone. “No man is an island.” The night’s discussion transitioned into Q & A from the audience. Panelists stayed after the event to address individual audience members one-on-one.
The distinguished panelists’ wealth lies far beyond the sum of their financial assets. Each imparted golden nuggets of wisdom acquired on their path to business success.
1. Importance of having integrity.
2. Effective networking -Surround yourself with the right people with the right set of skills.
3. Follow your passion.
Seminar attendee, Bernard Walker, shared what he learned from the night’s event. “You have to have faith in your own ideas and pursue them.” The audience left with the gifts of financial and business advice developed from years of experience and a mandate to pursue their passions.
